Heavyweight 240 GSM T-Shirt Guide: Why GSM Matters
Decoding GSM in t-shirts — from lightweight 140 GSM tees to heavyweight 240 GSM streetwear staples. Pick the right weight for your style.
What is GSM in t-shirts?
GSM stands for Grams per Square Metre — it's the most honest way to talk about t-shirt weight. The higher the GSM, the heavier, denser and more structured the fabric feels on your skin.
At INK LANE TEES we work with three GSM bands:
| Band | Weight | Feel | Use case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lightweight | 140 – 180 GSM | Drapey, soft, breathable | Summer layering, warm-weather staples |
| Mid-weight | 180 – 220 GSM | Balanced, daily-driver | All-season graphic tees |
| Heavyweight | 220 – 280 GSM | Structured, boxy, premium | Oversized streetwear, statement drops |
Why heavyweight rules streetwear
Heavyweight tees keep their shape. The fabric stands on its own — no clinging, no see-through, no drape. That's why every legitimate streetwear label (Fear of God, Kith, Aimé Leon Dore) defaults to 220 GSM and above.
Our flagship 400 GSM ANARCHY HEAVYWEIGHT TEE sits in box-fit territory: substantial drop shoulders, raw-hem energy, and screen-print graphics that pop without bleeding.
How to pick your GSM
- Daily wear, India summer: stay around 180-200 GSM. Cotton breathes, you don't melt.
- Oversized streetwear look: go 220 GSM minimum. Box-fit needs structure.
- Print-first design: heavyweight gives the cleanest print surface. The denser the fabric, the sharper the graphic.

What does GSM mean in a t-shirt?+
GSM stands for Grams per Square Metre — the weight of the fabric per square metre. Higher GSM = heavier, denser, more structured fabric.
Which GSM is best for streetwear?+
For oversized streetwear, 220 GSM and above is the standard. Anything lighter will drape rather than hold the box-fit shape that defines the silhouette.
Is 240 GSM too heavy for Indian summer?+
240 GSM in pure cotton is breathable and stays comfortable through Indian summers. The dense weave actually wicks sweat better than thin synthetics.
How is GSM measured?+
A 1m × 1m piece of the fabric is cut, dried, and weighed. The grams reading IS the GSM number.
Do heavyweight tees shrink more?+
Heavyweight tees typically shrink LESS than lightweight ones because the cotton is denser and pre-shrunk during production. Always cold-wash to be safe.
